Kevin D. Williamson

writes well, especially on “safe” libertarian topics like taxes and gun control. He’s one of the few remaining reasons to wade into the low-T, cuckophonous mediocrity that NR has become. No fool, KDW knows very well what side his bread is buttered on. In a notorious recent piece — worthy of PJ O’Rourke-level contempt — he bravely punched up thusly:

If you spend time in hardscrabble, white upstate New York, or eastern Kentucky, or my own native West Texas, and you take an honest look at the welfare dependency, the drug and alcohol addiction, the family anarchy—which is to say, the whelping of human children with all the respect and wisdom of a stray dog—you will come to an awful realization. It wasn’t Beijing. It wasn’t even Washington, as bad as Washington can be. It wasn’t immigrants from Mexico, excessive and problematic as our current immigration levels are. It wasn’t any of that […]

The truth about these dysfunctional, downscale communities is that they deserve to die. Economically, they are negative assets. Morally, they are indefensible […] The white American under-class is in thrall to a vicious, selfish culture whose main products are misery and used heroin needles. Donald Trump’s speeches make them feel good. So does OxyContin.

The alt-right blogosphere did not take kindly to these remarks; see the usual suspect for a NSFW graphic, brutal, yet spot-on takedown. John Derbyshire (who had been kind to KDW in the past) as usual, has a much more measured and nuanced take:

I know Kevin fairly well. My rather strong impression is that he’s a race realist, in an intuitive sort of way. I mean, he has no math or science, and understands nothing about the quantitative study of human nature; but at some level, he knows the score.

He is, though, young and ambitious. He can’t take the kind of risks that a geezer like me, at the other end of life, can cheerfully take. He knows what happened to Jason Richwine, and he’s not going to let it happen to him.

Further, he wants to cut a figure.

I’m not sure the Richwine parallel truly cuts straight. The fear of getting Richwined (or Watsoned or Summersed or Derbyshired, for that matter) is all too real, but did anyone hold a gun to KDW’s funny-shaped head to write that screed? Did Rich Lowry specifically demand Uncle Tim levels of debasement?

Apropos of the gun thing: For all of the manly bravado that KDW tries to imbue his writing and talk with, he’s nothing more than a “Bad Boy of the Donorist-Capitalist-Neocon commentariat”. Just because you write sensibly on gun control (or shoot guns yourself, or tweet out your home address at bat-wielding stalkers) doesn’t make you brave or smart. The real test of brains+balls is race realism. Indeed, the latter has become a sort of litmus indicator for intelligence-cum-courage: those who write on the topic intelligently (under their real names) are dissidents fully worthy of the term. Save your macho blustering for the alligator pit, Kevin.
